What is a long-running burst?
Long-running burst campaigns are a flexible way to use Yarno bursts for ongoing, self-led learning. Instead of running for a short, fixed period, these bursts stay open for months, allowing learners to join when they need to.
They’re especially useful for induction, refresher training and anytime learning where learners may start at different points throughout the year.
This article explains how long-running bursts work, when to use them and how to set one up.
What makes a long-running burst campaign unique?
A long-running burst will have an end date set well into the future (typically 6 or 12 months).
Unlike a traditional burst, where learners are invited all at once, long-running bursts are usually set up with:
- No learners invited initially (or only a small number)
- Learners added gradually over time, either by:
- Admins adding them directly, or
- Learners opting in via a campaign invite URL as a link or QR code
All other parts of setting up a long-running burst are the same as a regular Yarno burst, including the reporting available from the campaign dashboards.
How learners experience a long-running burst
From a learner’s perspective, there’s no difference between a long-running burst and a regular burst.
As soon as a learner is added:
- They receive a set number of Yarno questions
- They answer those questions
- Once completed, they’re finished with the campaign
Learners who join later don’t “catch up” or receive extra content — they simply complete the burst as designed.
When to use a long-running burst
Long-running bursts work best when learners need access to the same content at different times, rather than all at once.
Common use cases include:
Induction for new starters
Create a burst that covers:
- Company values
- Safety basics
- Key policies or procedures
Set the campaign to run for 6–12 months and share a QR code or link with new starters. Each new employee can complete the burst as part of their onboarding, without you needing to create a new campaign each time.
Refresher training for key topics
Use a long-running burst for:
- Compliance refreshers
- Product knowledge
- Safety reminders
Admins can add learners as needed, or share the campaign link for team members to opt in when a refresher is required.
Self-led learning at any time
For topics learners may want to revisit on their own schedule, such as leadership basics or customer service principles, a long-running burst allows people to join when it’s relevant to them.
How to set up a long-running burst campaign
Setting up a long-running burst is simple and uses the same steps as creating any other burst campaign.
- Create a new Burst Campaign
Set up your burst content as usual. - Set the end date well into the future
Typically 6 or 12 months ahead, depending on how long you want the campaign available. - Invite few or no learners initially
Many long-running bursts start with no learners invited. - Share the campaign link or QR code (optional)
Learners can only self-enrol if you share:- A direct campaign link, or
- A QR code
- Add learners over time as needed
You can:- Add learners manually via ‘edit campaign’
Things to keep in mind
- Long-running bursts behave exactly like standard bursts once a learner joins
- Learners complete the same set of questions, regardless of when they join
- The campaign must still be active — once the end date passes, no new learners can join
